Bio:

Chiara Zuccarino-Crowe recently joined the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (OMNS) as a Sea Grant Fellow through the John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship, where she works with the Communications and Stewardship Team to raise the visibility of Sanctuaries as destinations for recreation.  Originally from the Great Lakes region, and a migratory transplant to four different coastal regions, Chiara has always enjoyed living, working, and playing within a few miles of a major body of fresh or salt water.  Chiara’s background is in aquatic ecosystem assessments, environmental education/outreach, and fisheries science, and she holds a M.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife from Michigan State University, where she researched the effects of lake trout refuges on both target and non-target fish species in Lake Superior.  Prior to pursuing a graduate degree, she spend three years in the Monitoring, Indicators, and Reporting Branch of the EPA’s Great Lakes National Program Office, and also conducted creel surveys for the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission. 

Chiara’s long-term research and career interests relate to the integration of outreach, ecosystem modeling, and citizen science programs in supporting adaptive management of marine and freshwater protected areas – therefore promoting conservation efforts that can be sustained while providing educational services to the public.
