My research interests focus on understanding how coupled land-use and climate changes affect ecosystem functioning with consequences for potential feedbacks and altered ecosystem services. With the CAP-LTER I am working on understanding the spatial variability of the Phoenix, AZ urban heat island and the potential benefits and costs of using vegetation to mitigate extreme heat events. For this work I am using syntheses of remotely sensed imagery, eddy-covariance and other sensor systems, and dynamic models to improve understanding of urban energy balances. I have on-going interests in urban biogeochemical cycles and community assembly both within Phoenix, AZ and comparatively across a network of cities.
