Forest-cover change is recognized as a principal forcing of global environmental change, and has been studied intensively. However, most assessments lack temporal depth, do not consider types of disturbances, and/or do not map different tree species. In my research, I am mainly focusing on detecting forest-cover changes for the temperate zone of European Russia, and try to give insights of how socio-economic disturbances affect forest cover. Additionally I try to contribute to the development of techniques for species distinction and separation of forest disturbance types. Remote sensing and GIS form the backbone of my work. With my research I hope to contribute to both, the Land-Use/Land-Cover science community by providing insights in how underlying conditions affect forest-cover changes, and to other research disciplines by providing detailed and accurate land-cover information derived from remote sensing data. I thus hope to contribute to a better understanding of the interplay of humans and the environment with the goal to contribute to a sustainable use of land.
