MRI Synthesis Workshop call for participants

MRI Synthesis Workshop call for participants

June 24, 2011

The Mountain Research Initiative will bring together a small number of experts on social-ecological research and coupled human-natural system modeling in mountain regions around the world to participate in a synthesis workshop: Building Resilience of Mountain Social-Ecological Systems to Global Change.

Workshop leaders are Julia Klein, of Colorado State University, and Anne Nolin, of Oregon State University. The workshop will take place in April or May 2012 in Fort Collins, Colo.

The workshop will explore:

  • The nature and utility of the various coupled models currently in use,
  • The expression of system attributes such as resilience, sustainability, and adaptive capacity in terms of model inputs, variables, and outputs.
  • Emerging themes across studies on resilience of coupled social-ecological mountain systems to global change.

The workshop will produce:

  • A state-of-the-science paper on social-ecological mountain systems and future directions for the field.
  • A grant proposal to the U.S. National Science Foundation for an international Research Coordination Network project.

If would like to participate in this workshop, please visit the MRI web page for more information, including a detailed concept note on the synthesis workshop and details on how to be considered for participation (a CV and a statement of what you will contribute to the workshop are required). All email communication regarding the workshop should be sent to ritter@giub.unibe.ch.

The deadline for application is July 15, 2011.
