At the 2009 US-IALE, CHANS-Net organized several activities, including hosting a special symposium on "Complexity in Human-Nature Interactions Across Landscapes." Representatives of 17 CHANS projects presented new and exciting results. Symposium speakers and their presenations are available online.

The symposium was followed by a companion workshop on “Challenges and Opportunities in Research on Complexity of Coupled Human and Natural Systems" where participants engaged in in-depth discussions of the symposium presentations and began synthesizing findings across sites.

The symposium speakers and CHANS Fellows interacted informally at a CHANS Roundtable lunch and at the NASA-MSU/CHANS banquet. These were times for junior scholars to interact with one another, with NASA-MSU awardees, and with more senior colleagues, in order to build the CHANS community.
